“Working with neuro-diverse students and gifted and talented students has taught me how critical it is for them to be understood and have learning environments that foster their potential and growth.”

Meet Marlene
As a classroom teacher, I enjoyed teaching students who challenged the status quo and questioned rules and regulations that they disliked and disobeyed. I spent a great deal of time wondering about the system and the things that seemed to me to be setting children up for failure and not success. I observed the social situations that occurred and the behaviour management that was in place and found it was not too dissimilar to what was in place when I was at school.

What others say…
“Every once in a while you meet a person who is an educator to the bone. And even less often, someone who takes their considerable knowledge, experience and plain nous to improve the educational landscape in which children must harvest the skills that will ensure lives lived fully, meaningfully, responsibly, and ethically.
Marlene has a razor-sharp mind that drives a relentless need to pursue best teaching practice and a heart filled with the love of children and the bravery to say what needs to be said, do what needs to be done, stay the course and perhaps more importantly, change direction when the facts demand it.
We are privileged to have Marlene join Play Is The Way and know she brings energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the cause of behaviour education in New Zealand.”
“I thought your workshop delivery was inclusive for all of the participants from the school.
Marlene gave us confidence in our workshop to implement the programme fully across the school. The interactive parts of trialling the games and brainstorming with colleagues made it a fun-filled day. Since implementing PITW into the school, we have seen a common language among all staff members when speaking with students.

“I thoroughly enjoyed reading your key philosophy and approach document around Te Whare Tapa Whā. Your determination and tenacity to make an unmistakable impact has called upon you to reach out to others. You have started to stretch teachers and their thinking in their classrooms. You are leading important change. It is to influence teacher behaviour so that our tamariki can stand in their own space, To Be The Best They Can Be.”
“Being the very inexperienced parents of a young gifted child, we were guided into Marlene’s expert caring hands as soon as school commenced – and we have not looked back. Marlene’s support and advice has been invaluable as we have navigated this new world. Her excellent communication skills with both tamariki and whānau have built a strong foundation for achievement, and her proactive communication with us about our child’s progress and challenges, shows Marlene’s dedication to fostering a strong home-school partnership. Marlene’s ability to adapt and adjust teaching strategies to meet the changing needs of students is impressive, and has led her to designing individual education plans for schools. We are very grateful to have found Marlene and feel assured that our son is now in the best of hands to reach his potential should he wish it.”
“It takes one to know one.”
Marlene has long been committed to pegs that fit neither round nor square holes. Gifted kids need strength-based approaches from educators; Marlene gets that in spades.
She will challenge, poke, and prod whatever and whomever it takes, to make sure that the gifted kid gets an educational experience that builds on their strengths.
Professionally, I have known and worked with Marlene for a long time: she really walks her talk. Her advocacy for kids is as relentless as rust.
